Never send emails without a subject

Email 04 October 2010

How many times do you get an email without a subject line or with something so unspecific or random that you have no idea what the email is about until you've read in through? This is harming you and your business.

You know that it makes sense to write a good title to your emails

Sending an email without specifying a subject line is such a big wrong.

  • Firstly it's just impolite.
  • It’s unhelpful, non-intuitive and unfriendly.

Also most spam filters worth their salt will just kick it straight into the naughty bin.

So you've just fell at the first hurdle, your recipient doesn't even know you’ve sent them an email because it's not in their inbox yet – it's sat in a spam folder and might (if you’re lucky) get noticed later.

You must ALWAYS specify a subject line in every email you send

Poor Subject Lines

OK so no subject line is unforgiveable, but what about other poorly thought out subject lines.

Things like "website", company name, "Hi", hello, next week etc… are all meaning less.

They just don't allow the reader to determine whether or not they should open your email.

Yes, people do decide if they should open an email.

When a large amount of emails are to waded through, many people will scan the subject lines to see which ones are the most urgent or interesting.

You need to make sure that you've written something meaningful and eye catching.

How do you feel?

So how do you feel when you get an email with a blank subject ?

How do you feel when you get an email with a subject line like "website", "problem" or "urgent"

Trust us, it just goes straight to the bottom of our visual priority list.

So think about how your intended recipient will feel when they receive your email.

So why should I bother?

If your inbox is like ours, you'll get a ton of new emails every day. It's even worse on a Monday morning when you get everything that has been sent to you over the weekend.

We all naturally want to filter our emails quickly.

Firstly by who has sent them to you and then by subject line.

Your subject needs to get the general gist of the email across in one simple step and very swiftly.

We are all pressed for time and if someone has to open your email to determine if they should read it, trust us they'll do it later. Doing it later might not be what you want from your email, so why not spend a few seconds writing a subject line.

You know that it makes sense to write a good title to your emails. If you don’t you are just being lazy.
